Bah Humbug! A Spirited Woodward’s Tradition to Benefit Community Arts in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. A theatrical adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Reconceived as a staged reading and musical event, this imaginative all-ages production offers a bittersweet twist on a cherished seasonal classic. Bah! Humbug! runs December 14 – 18, 2011 in the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, at the Goldcorp Centre for the Arts.

Commissioned and co-produced by SFU Woodward’s Cultural Programs in partnership withVancouver Moving Theatre, Bah! Humbug! is a benefit for the community arts in the Downtown Eastside and the Heart of the City Festival.

Now more than 150 years old, Dickens’ timeless story remains relevant today, especially in light of parallels between the economic disparities of Victorian London and Vancouver’s DTES.

Directed by Max Reimer, Artistic Managing Director, Vancouver Playhouse Theatre Company, the 2011 Bah! Humbug! features award-winning actor Jay Brazeau as the irascible Ebenezer Scrooge, First Nations actor Margo Kane as the narrator. Juno-award winning musician and actor Jim Byrnes as Jacob Marley, and gospel and blues singer/actor Tom Pickett as Bob Cratchit. These Vancouver favourites are joined by a cast of professional and DTES community actors, multiple instrumentalist Joseph ‘Pepe’ Danza, and the Saint James Music Academy Youth Choir. Music direction is by Neil Weisensel, with music drawn from a modern songbook of pop songs, folk, blues, gospel and industrial rock along with seasonal favourites.

Bah! Humbug! runs for six performances only December 14-17 (7:30 pm) and December 17-18 (2:00 pm) at the Fei and Milton Wong Experimental Theatre, Goldcorp Centre for the Arts, 149 West Hastings. Tickets are $19 (students/seniors) and $29 (adults) and can be purchased at the Vancouver Playhouse Box Office by phone at 604-873-3311 or online at www.sfuwoodwards.ca

On October 16th, 2011, the Vancouver Farmers Markets will present their 3rd annual dinner fundraiser event: RIPE: A Harvest Celebration, at the Creekside Community Centre from 4pm – 8pm. RIPE is a casual, family-style meal that includes a feast of delicious and seasonal food prepared by local chefs and market vendors, regional beer, wine, and cocktails, a silent auction, and live entertainment.

The RIPE dinner will be a sit-down, buffet-style meal starting with appetizers prepared by chefs from Meat & Bread, Vij’s Rangoli, Campagnola, and Swallow Tail Supper Club, using seasonal food provided by Farmers Markets vendors. Cocktails, beer and wine will be sipped while enjoying the spectacular view of the mountains from the Creekside Community Centre in Olympic Village.

The Vancouver Farmers Markets, a registered BC non-profit society, hosts their annual dinner celebration to raise funds for two main purposes:

1. To grow and improve the organization that hosts Vancouver’s weekly, year-round Farmers Markets in their efforts to bring healthy, local food to urban consumers.

2. To build the Farmers Nest Egg Fund, an initiative created by VFM to help farmer vendors in times of financial need and to expand the network of local farmers that make the markets so successful.

RIPE tickets are available at any of the Vancouver Farmers Markets, at Rangoli Restaurant, and online at http://eatlocal.org/ripe/. Ticket prices are $50 for members, $65 for non-members (includes one year VFM membership), and $25 for children under 12.

Enter to WIN, 2 tickets to the Film KING OF PASTRY.

December 17-19 + 22-23

Pacific Cinémathèque, 1131 Howe Street, Vancouver

Kings of Pastry takes audiences into France’s prestigious Meilleurs Ouvriers de France (Best Craftsmen of France), an intense, high-stakes pastry competition that “combines the skills of a baker, the vision of an abstract artist and the hands of a bomb diffusion team” (San Francisco Chronicle). Pacific Cinémathèque presents the Vancouver Premiere and Exclusive First Run of this never-before-filmed test of France’s finest artisans, revealed by documentary veterans D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hedegus, makers of The War Room and Dont Look Back.

This is nothing less than the Olympics of pastry. The film follows several elite pastry chefs as they embark on an intense, remarkably nerve-wracking three days of mixing, piping, sculpting, and sugaring. The blue, white and red striped collar worn on the jackets of the winners is more than the ultimate recognition for every pastry chef — it is a dream and an obsession.

TICKETS:

$10.50 Adult

$9.00 Senior/Student

$3 annual membership required
